Matthew is a GP with a longstanding specialist interest in chronic urinary tract infection. It is a crippling condition that affects all manner of life. His interest in the specialty began at medical school when he would help his father, the late Professor James Malone-Lee with research in the field. He would go on to write a final year dissertation on the subject.

As a GP it became apparent how common the affliction was and he decided to learn about managing it better. He trained under his father for several years learning the methods to diagnose and treat the condition. Matthew recognises how badly people with chronic urinary tract infection suffer. Alongside the awful physical symptoms there can be harrowing psychological effects. He believes a holistic approach is very important in looking after patients.

Matthew loves working with the team at 10 Harley Street, treating people so they heal and get their life back.

He enjoys reading, being with family and looking after his newborn daughter, keeping fit when time allows and travelling.

Sheela is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust. She did her undergraduate medical training from Bangalore Medical College in India. Sheela moved to the UK, completed her Postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from London Deanery and a PhD in the Division of Medicine at University College London under the late Professor Malone-Lee.

Sheela brings a wealth of experience and a global perspective to the Clinic. She has travelled and lectured nationally and internationally. She is a valuable member of our multidisciplinary team as she has knowledge and skills in Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Urogynaecology and Rapid access diagnostic Gynae oncology. She has a special focus on females with chronic bladder pain and chronic and recurrent UTIs.

Sheela recognises that each patient and their family’s journey is unique. She strongly believes and practices by William Osler’s (1849–1919) dictum: ‘listen to your patient, he is telling you the diagnosis’. She is passionate about shared care. She is empathetic and extremely patient, gentle and approachable. She prides herself on ethical and compassionate individualised care. Her approach has allowed her to build a network of respectful collaborations and relationships within and outside the country, this plays a crucial role in delivering outstanding care to women.

Ed is a Clinical Fellow, GP with Special Interest in Chronic Cystitis. He developed his expertise under the training and supervision of Professor James Malone-Lee. He has worked at the Clinic since 2020.

In his earlier years as a GP, Ed observed that most patients recovered quickly from cystitis, but others struggled with recurrent and persistent symptoms.

He became interested in the work Professor Malone-Lee was doing in the field of chronic cystitis. As he delved into the research findings published by Professor Malone-Lee and his team, he was fascinated by the breakthroughs they had made in understanding the pathophysiology of the disease.

Ed has gone on to contribute to the ongoing research projects and treatment outcome analysis of the clinic. This feeds into the ongoing evolution of the treatment protocol, originally devised by Professor James Malone-Lee.

When Ed is not working in the Chronic UTI clinic, he works as an NHS GP. He therefore has broad medical experience and expertise, and this gives him an holistic approach to patient assessment and management.
